Professor Abimbola Akande Laogun, B.Sc (Ibadan), M.Sc. Eng (ABU), Ph.D (London); C. Phys; F. Inst. P; FNIP was born at Iraberi in Egbedore Local government Area of Sun State Nigeria.
He has his primary education at the Baptist Day Schoo, Iragberi and secondary education at Osogbo Grammar School, Osogbo where he obtained his Cambridge West African School Certificate with Grade 1 in 1961. He later proceeded to the University of Ibadan, Ibadan where he graduated with a Second Class B.Sc (Honours) degree in Physics in 1967. In 1968, he attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating in 1970 with an M.Sc (Eng) degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Electronics and telecommunication.
In 1971, he joined the Academic Staff of the Physics Department of the Mid-West Institute of Technology, Benin City, which later became the University of Benin. In 1974, he went on leave to study Medical Electronics at the Physics Department of Guy’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, where he obtained a Ph.D degree in Medical Physics in March 1977. He also spend the Sabbatical year 1982/1983 as a Post Doctoral Commonwealth Research Fellow at the physics Department of Queen Elizabeth College, University of London.
Professor Abimbola Akande Laogun was a Senior Lecturer in Physics at the University of Benin in 1980 and a full professor in 1987. He was Head of Physics Department, University of Benin from 1987 to 1989 and also from 1998 2001. He was Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Benin from 1992 to 1994. He has served as External Examiner of Physics at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels in many universities in Nigeria.
Professor Laogun served the University of Benin in many capabilities including membership of the following committees and boards. The Committee of Provost, and Deans, Management Board of the University of Benin Computer Centre, Postgraduate Committee, Appointments and Promotions Committee and also Research and Publications Committee.
On retirement, Prof. Laogun joined the academic staff of the Physics Department, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State in 2007. He is currently the Head of that Department and has been involved in the department administration, teaching of Physics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, research and curriculum development.
Prof. Laogun’s major achievements include (1) Non-invasive measurement of arterial compliance in health and cardiovascular disorders using the Doppler Ultrasound technique and (2) Investigation and understanding of the molecular behavior of insulin and human hemoglobins by dielectric spectroscopy.
He was one of the recipients of the Third Word Academy of Science Research Grant Awards for Physics in 1987. His other Honours and Awards include the University of Benin Medallion for Inaugural Lecture in 2005, the Distinguished Leadership in National Development Gold Award by Corporate & Media Africa Communications Limited in 2014 and the Global Life-time Achievers Gold Award by the Nigerian Top Leaders International Magazine also in 2014.
Prof. Laogun a 2015 United Nations-POLAC Peace Ambassador (Amb P) is a Chartered Physicist, a Life Fellow of the Institute of Physics, London, Life fellows of the Nigerian Institute of Physics and Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering.
He is a Marguis Biographee in WHO’S WHO in Science and Engineering (4th Edition) and WHO’s WHO in the World (16th Edition).
